AI for Young Coders: Build, Train and Think About AI

Grades 2-4 · Beginner

Ages 8–13 · 12 lessons · No experience needed AI is already part of the world kids are growing up in. It filters messages, recognizes pictures and answers questions, often sounding sure even when it’s wrong. In this hands-on course, kids stop treating AI as magic and learn how it really works by building it themselves. Students work with Pip, a friendly robot that starts out knowing nothing. Kids are the teachers: they give Pip examples, train it, test it, and work out what to fix when it gets something wrong. Then they code games and apps that use what Pip learned, and finish by designing an AI app from their own idea.

What makes this course different

  • Kids build AI, not just use it. Students train their own models and see how the results change with the examples they choose.
  • Real coding, beginner-friendly. Students start with blocks in our Block Lab environment and can see the real JavaScript behind them.
  • Mistakes are part of the fun. Kids try to fool their AI, find out why it failed, and make it better.
  • Thinking comes with building. Fairness, bias and responsible use run through the course, in language kids understand.

What kids will learn

How AI learns
  • The difference between a normal program and AI that learns from examples
  • How AI can learn from words, drawings, numbers and camera images
  • What a neural network is and how training improves it
How chatbots work
  • How a chatbot writes its answers
  • How instructions, called prompts, shape what a chatbot does
  • Why AI can sound confident and still be wrong, and how to check
Coding with confidence
  • Coding basics, including events, loops, decisions and variables
  • How to find and describe bugs
  • When an AI coding helper really helps, and when to test its advice or think it through yourself
Using AI responsibly
  • How to measure whether a model is accurate
  • How unbalanced data leads to biased results, and who can be affected
  • What real cases of unfair AI can teach us, and how to set ground rules for using AI well

What kids take away

By the end of the course, students will have built a collection of working AI projects, including an app from their own idea. They’ll be able to explain how AI works and question what it tells them, and they’ll have written their own code of ethics for AI as a class.

Who it’s for

This course is for curious kids ages 8–13 who want to know how AI works. No coding or AI experience is needed. Younger students get plenty of guidance, and older or more experienced students get extra challenges.
